Picking The Right Holster – Part 1

January 6th, 2011

The most important quality in a holster is safety.  The holster must safely store the firearms until it is ready for use.  A safe holster covers the entire trigger guard and will not allow anything into the trigger guard while it is holsters.  Also the holster needs to hold the firearms securely in place so it can not wiggle free through the course of holding the gun.  How tight the firearm is held is personal preference as long as it does not come out of the holster unintentionally.

There are many styles of holsters on the market and not all of them are made equally.  In other words when it comes to holsters you get what you pay for.  So don’t go cheap on the holster, expect to pay at least $40.  Shop well know brands like BlackHawk, Galco, Crossbreed, etc.

If you want to carry concealed then there are several standard types of holsters.  There are Inside The Waistband (IWB), On The Belt, Ankle, and Pocket holsters.  The big factors in deciding which type to pick is going to be the size of your firearm, how well it needs to be concealed, and ultimately where on your body you want to conceal it.  The Inside The Waistband holsters are very concealable and with a little time very comfortable.  Also some of them allow you to tuck in your shirt while keeping the gun concealed.  The On The Belt Outside The Waistband holsters are very comfortable but not as concealable as other holsters.  They work with larger guns but to be used as a concealment holster you need to wear a shirt baggy enough to cover it without everyone seeing the gun underneath.  The Ankle holster is great because it is extremely concealable, people generaly spend little time looking at your ankles and most pants aren’t tight enough for the guns to be visible.  They biggest disadvantage to the the ankle holster is the time it takes to draw your firearm from the holster.  The Pocket holsters are great in that they are comfortable and very concealable.  The biggest disadvantage to Pocket holsters is that you need a small firearms for them to work well and often times those guns are not easy to shoot and the calibers are small.

You have your Concealed Weapons Permit – Now What?

December 1st, 2010

You took your class and have received your concealed weapons permit.  What do you do now?  The answer is simple get some more training.  Whether you have an Arizona, Nevada, Idaho, or Utah Concealed Weapons permit or even some other firearms permit from another state, the training was very minimal.  Some states require more training than others to get a concealed weapons permit but regardless I recommend getting some more training.  Most classes cover the laws and the basic self defense topics, some even have live fire.  The fact of the matter is if you get into a gun fight with just your concealed carry class to fall back on you are very likely to loose.

More training from a qualified “Self Defense Firearms Instructor” will give you the skills and abilities to defend yourself if the time comes.  A self defense instructor will not just focus on marksmanship but other things like the balance between speed and accuracy, what kind of cover and concealment to use and how to use it.  They will discuss topics of home defense and how to do it and particularly how not to do it.  Such instructors can be found locally  through shooting ranges, the Internet, or word of mouth.  Also they can be found at top shooting schools around the nation.

Now of course we also provide top quality armed self defense courses.  We offer private as well as group classes, but if you don’t get training through us we still recommend you get training through others such as Front Sight, Gun Sight, or Thunder Ranch.  These are schools that are capable of giving the kind of training discussed here.  If you are interested in training give us a call or an e-mail and we can discuss the training that would be right for your.

The key here is get more training.  When you get into a self defense situation you will not rise to the occasion, but you will fall to the highest level of training that you have.  When you get into that self defense situation lets hope your concealed carry class isn’t the highest level of train you fall back on.

Happy Thanksgiving!

November 25th, 2010

Happy Thanksgiving from the Armed Self Defense Institute!

In the spirit of Thanksgiving we featured a video on our YouTube page called “Is it bulletproof ep 3 – The Frozen Turkey”.  This is of course part of a series we are doing entitled “Is it bulletproof”.  Here is the link http://www.youtube.com/user/TrainASDI?feature=mhum#p/u/7/yySo4p2f_wM , but before you look what do you think, is a frozen turkey bulletproof?

One last thought, as Americans we have plenty to be thankful for, but just remember to be thankful for our freedom and our right to bare arms.  It is this right to bare arms that protects all out other rights.  It is this right that allows us to have concealed firearms to protect ourselves.  But remember be grateful for this right isn’t enough, “A right exorcised Will be lost”.  Be thankful for this right and exercise it by getting a Utah concealed firearms permit, concealed weapons permit, concealed handgun permit, or whatever it is called in your state.

Enjoy your Thanksgiving!

Watch the “ASDI Spice” video here

November 16th, 2010

We thought we would let everyone know that the new “ASDI Spice” video is now up on our YouTube channel aswell as our website.  Here are the links:

Our Website: http://www.trainasdi.com/videos/?Video=10 YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/user/TrainASDI?feature=mhum#p/u/9/CWYSPk-8oDE

For those who don’t know the is a commercial we shot to promote the Utah Concealed Firearms Permit, but the video had some clear inspiration from the guys over at Old Spice (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=owGykVbfgUE).  We liked their video so much we made our own and had a ton of fun in the process.

The video does promote getting a concealed weapons permit in a comicalway.  Now of course we understand that getting your permit and choosing to carry a firearms concealed or otherwise is serious.  The purpose of the video is to entertain people and then get them to think about getting their permit and start looking into it more seriously.  So, enjoy the video and if you don’t have a conceal carry permit we invite you to take a class from The Armed Self Defense Institute so you too can carry a firearm like “the instructor your instructor could be like”.  For class Schedule click http://www.trainasdi.com/schedule/

Burglar shot in Kearns Utah

November 9th, 2010

I have gotten a lot of questions about the shooting in Kearns Utah.  For those of you who don’t know the very basic story is that a homeowner woke up to find a man attempting to enter his home through the sliding glass door.  The homeowner was armed and shot the man through the sliding glass door.  The would be burglar ran a short distance before dieing due to the shot to the chest.  Now of course there are other details to this story coming out and there are plenty of articles on the Internet about it if you want to know more.  I thought I might just take this opportunity to talk on the subject of home defense or “defense of habitation” as it is stated in Utah law.

To stop a forcible felony you may use all force necessary including and up to lethal force.  Burglary is a forcible felony and if necessary lethal force maybe used to stop it.  Also Utah law states that a person may use all force necessary up to lethal force against a person who is attempting to enter or who has entered the home in a violent or stealthy manner and if he or she believes the person has entered to do personal violence to someone in the home.  Of course this is Utah law paraphrased but it  shows you two different laws that aide Utah residents in defense of themselves and those in their home.  As to the shooting in Kearns, Utah if the home owner reasonably believed the person was committing burglary or had intent to do personal harm to someone in the home then he was justified in shooting.

Here at the Armed Self Defense Institute we won’t tell you exactly what to do in a situation like this.  When it comes to shooting at another person the morals and ethics of what is right and wrong are personal.  What we can do is arm you with the information that will help you make these tough decisions based on your situation and beliefs.  If you don’t have your Utah Concealed Firearms Permit (Concealed Weapons Permit), that is a great place to start to learn laws and basic self defense knowledge.  If you have your permit but would like to learn more about home defense or personal protection we can arrange a private class or group class to fit your needs.  If you think you might want training, get some.  If you don’t know what kind of training is right for you give us a call and we will help you figure it out whether that training be through us or someone else.  Our number is (801) 613-2734
